Ultrasound Guided Occipital Nerve Blocks for Posterior Craniotomies

A new study by the Department of Anesthesia at Lurie Children’s hospital has published an interesting case series on the use of ultrasound guided occipital nerve blocks for posterior craniotomies.

Now Available – Use of Lidocaine Infusions for Pain Management Perioperatively Round Table

This Round Table, hosted by the SIG: Creating and Maintaining Pediatric Acute Pain Services, we learn from three experts who will share their clinical experience, research, and protocols for the use of lidocaine infusions for pain at their respective institutions. The goal of this discussion is to review the evidence for the perioperative risks and benefits of lidocaine infusions in pediatric pains, share approaches for the initiation and maintenance of lidocaine infusions in an inpatient setting, and broadly detail indications its use in both acute and chronic pain.

FDA Approves First Test to Help Identify Elevated Risk of Developing Opioid Use Disorder

U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first test that uses DNA in assessing whether certain individuals may have an elevated risk of developing opioid use disorder (OUD).  The test, AvertD, intended to be used prior to first exposure to oral opioid pain medications in patients being considered for a 4-30 day prescription for the treatment of acute pain.

Perioperative Regional Anesthesia Pain Outcomes in Children: A Retrospective Study of 3,160 Regional Anesthetics in Routine Practice

SPPM members from Stanford University recently published a retrospective study in The Clinical Journal of Pain, analyzing pediatric regional anesthesia from 2014-2021 and their perioperative outcomes.

Regional Anesthesia and Sickle Cell Crisis in Pediatric Patients

 

A recent review published in Pediatric Anesthesia discussed the current evidence supporting the use of regional anesthesia in sickle cell disease patients who are experiencing acute pain crisis. Given the challenges in controlled sickle cell disease pain, this study is worth a look.
