Article of the Month: Chronic Postsurgical Pain in Children and Young Adults with Cancer and Choice of Regional Anesthesia for Amputation and Limb-sparing Surgery

Dr. Doralina L. Anghelescu et al have published a retrospective study examining regional anesthesia for pediatric patients who undergo amputation/limb sparing surgery and whether particular techniques help decrease chronic postsurgical pain. SPOILER: one method showed significantly decreased rates of chronic postsurgical pain of a neuropathic nature. September is Pain Awareness Month

September is Pain Awareness Month, a time to raise public awareness of issues in the area of pain and pain management for children and adolescents. Our president, Dr. Robert Wilder, shares a message (below) for Pain Awareness as pain continues to be an issue that impacts the pediatric population.

National Sickle Cell Awareness Month

September was proclaimed as National Sickle Cell Awareness Month by President Joseph Biden in 2021. Complementary Therapies in Medicine has published a special issue to commemorate National Sickle Cell Awareness Month with several articles that would be of interest for pain practitioners.

Acupuncture for Pain Management in Pediatric Patients with Sickle Cell Disease

 

This article provides a review of current research regarding the use of acupuncture as a pain treatment strategy for pediatric patients with SCD experiencing acute pain. A literature review of scientific papers published within the last ten years was conducted on the topic. Acupuncture is feasible and acceptable, with statistically significant findings for effectiveness as an adjunct treatment for pain in this setting.
