Better Care for Children in Pain

2021 was the  IASP Global Year About Back Pain and two important publications have been released related to chronic back pain in children and adolescents, as part of a special edition of the journal Children on Back Pain in Children and Adolescents, edited by Prof. Dr. Boris Zernikow. A new paper published in Canadian Journal of Pain evaluates the perisurgical process by identifying key problems and propose potential solutions for the pre-, intra-, and postoperative pain states to both prevent and manage the transition of acute to chronic pain. We propose an eight-step process involving preemptive and preventative analgesia, behavioral interventions, and the use of biomarkers (brain-based, inflammatory, or genetic) to facilitate timely evaluation and treatment of premorbid psychological factors, ongoing surgical pain, and postoperative pain to provide an overall improved outcome.

A call out for manuscript submissions related to pediatric regional anesthesia, specifically fascial plane blocks, has been put out by Frontiers in Medicine. Submissions due in September 2022.

Dr. Vidya Chidambaran and colleagues have written a thought provoking opinion piece in a recent issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, regarding the use of cryoablation for management of acute perioperative pain in pediatric patients undergoing pectus excavatum repair. Given the lack of data with this widely used technique, are we moving too quickly?
